ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Brian is a Senior Technical Trainer with Columbus McKinnon Corporation, specializing in entertainment rigging, rope access, and hoist maintenance. He has worked as a rigging professional in the entertainment industry since 2005 and is an ETCP Arena certified rigger, as well as an ETCP recognized trainer. Brian maintains SPRAT 3 & IRATA 3 Rope Access certifications and has been using rope access since 2007. The advancement and sharing of knowledge are Brian’s greatest passions.
AGENDA
Our Rigger Boot Camp focuses on the practical skills and tools necessary to work as an entertainment rigger in the live event industry. Each section of this workshop builds toward the final day of training, where all of the topics come together in team-based practical applications.
DAYS 1 & 2: TOOLS OF THE TRADE
RIGGING HARDWARE
We start this training by learning how to identify, inspect, and apply the most common types of rigging equipment used in the entertainment industry.
TRUSS INSPECTION
Learn how to perform regular and annual inspections of aluminum truss, based on the ANSI E1.2-2021 standard, using tools common to work site and shop environments.
ELECTRIC CHAIN HOISTS
This section of the training will start with the safe handling & operation of CM Lodestars & Prostars, along with their applicable regulations & standards.
Hands-on activities include setting travel limits, checking and adjusting brakes, replacing electrical cords, replacing chain, frequent inspections, and basic troubleshooting techniques.
ESSENTIAL KNOTS, BENDS, & HITCHES
Rope is a rigger’s most versatile and indispensable asset. Like any other tool, it is only as effective as the person using it. This section of the course covers a variety of knots, bends, and hitches essential to the day-to-day activities of an entertainment rigger.
We won’t just learn how to tie these knots, but also how we can use them in realistic rigging applications.
MECHANICAL ADVANTAGE SYSTEMS
Learn how to multiply your lifting power with mechanical advantage. First, we will explore the properties of simple, compound, and complex mechanical advantage systems. They you will get to build and operate systems, using a variety of equipment available in our facility.
WIRE ROPE FUNDAMENTALS
No matter what type of rigging you do, wire rope is a critical component to the overhead attachment and movement of loads.
This training will teach you how to identify and select wire rope, as well as how to make safe and effective terminations and splices in wire rope.
Hands-on activities include crimping, reeving splices, Flemish eye, and use of wire rope clips.
DAY 3
RIGGING MATH 101
This workshop combines classroom and hands-on practical exercises to teach fundamental rigging math. This class uses the same standardized formulas, as those provided for the ETCP Rigging - Arena exam. The hands-on component has participants assemble a truss structure and apply the loads. Thereafter, students apply the formulas, after which they will turn on the load cells to compare their load estimations.
First, we introduce the formula and walk you through how to use it. Then we rig it using actual loads and load cells to see how these formulas work in real time.
Rigging Math 101 addresses the following scenarios:
- Uniform and point loads on determinate and indeterminate structures
- Cantilevered loads.
- Bridle dimensions and forces.
DAY 4
FALL PROTECTION AUTHORIZED USER
Falls remain the leading cause of worker fatalities, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Learn how to protect yourself while working at height and stay up to date on the most recent fall protection regulations, standards, and equipment.
This training goes beyond online courses, utilizing practical applications and hands-on activities to demonstrate proper practices and ultimately keep you safe on the job.
- Attendees are encouraged to bring their own fall protection equipment.
- Attendees will also participate in a variety of climbing and work-at-height activities, including a team rescue.
SAFE RIGGING TECHNIQUES
Showtime!
From the ground to the beam, participants will learn how to build and use a variety of rigging assemblies for safe attachment to truss and structures. This is where we take all the skills and knowledge learned so far and apply them to real-world scenarios.
